| Monument of Governor Perry |
May 2010 Governor Perry 1814-1865 Madison Starke Perry was the only
Governor to come from Alachua County and played a critical roll in building Florida's militia prior to the war. When Florida
seceded on 11 January 1861 he called for the evacuation of all Federal troops from Florida. The plan was to replace them with
the recently formed Militia. His term as Governor ended on 7 October 1861 at which time he served as Colonel of the 7th Florida
Infantry Regiment. He was forced to resign on 30 April 1963 due to poor health, dying at his plantation in Rochelle in March
1865. There are three Florida towns named for him: Madison, Starke and Perry. His grave has been prominently marked for many
years, but Mrs. Perry and daughter Sallie have both reposed in unmarked graves until now. The
Col. David Lang Chapter 289 purchased and erected grave markers for Mrs. Madison Starke Perry and Daughter Sallie in the Oak
Ridge Cemetery in Rochelle on 6 May 2010. Their son, Madison Starke Perry, Jr. is also buried
in an unmarked grave. The COL David Lang Chapter is currently ordering a VA marker for him as he was a veteran of the 7th
Florida Infantry and the 2nd Florida Cavalry. When this marker is obtained an appropriate dedication ceremony will be scheduled.
